Director Smith Holiday Message-
“Why Can’t Everyday Be Like Christmas?”
It is the “most wonderful time of the year” again as we approach the close of another year. Streets and store windows are decorated, people are shopping, and children are on their best behavior as Santa’s arrival draws near.
During the holidays, everyone’s mood seems to improve. We extend greetings to complete strangers, let others go ahead of us in line, and become more generous toward those in need. As a child of the 1960s, I remember hearing Elvis Presley on the radio singing “Why Can’t Every Day Be Like Christmas?” The older I get, the more I find myself wondering the same thing, why can’t every day be like Christmas?
Family quarrels are often set aside for the holidays. History even tells us of wars that paused for ceasefires on Christmas Day. Generosity increases as we give to holiday efforts supporting those who are less fortunate. While these are wonderful gestures that uplift society, why must our charity end on December 26? Does hunger cease the next day? Are lives no longer important? Are the unhoused suddenly without need?
It is often said, “Why can’t we keep Christmas with us and carry it in our hearts?” Imagine what a better world we could create if we truly lived that way, where the needs of all were valued every day of the year. A world where hunger was eliminated, homelessness was addressed, health care was available to all, jobs paid a living wage, and laws were passed that gave everyone a fair chance to improve their lives. If we carry the love of Christmas in our hearts, all of these things are possible.
My grandchildren are the light of my life, and watching the wonder in their eyes warms my heart. At the same time, I can’t help but wonder what kind of world we are creating for them. Are we building a future where everyone’s needs are met, rather than a world where rewards are concentrated among a few? What if we made every day like Christmas and allowed that spirit to last throughout the entire year?
We in labor are dedicated to justice for all workers, justice in wages, justice in benefits, justice in the halls of government, and justice in opportunity. An injustice to one is an injustice to all. That is why we stand together in solidarity.
This holiday season, it is my wish that solidarity continues to strengthen each of you. In Region 8, we are a family, and families stick together. I wake up every day grateful to represent you and thankful for the kinship we share. Everyone faces struggles and challenges, but having one another to lean on, both at work and at home, helps us lighten the load. That is who we are.
I applaud each local in this region as they remain active in their communities, helping others, bringing joy, and fulfilling needs. Your efforts will bring smiles to thousands of little faces on Christmas morning. Let us remember to ask ourselves, “Why Can’t Every Day Be Like Christmas?” because the need will remain on December 26 and throughout
the year. May we always set aside something for those who have less and keep them in our hearts.
As we gather with family and friends this year, let us remember those who are grieving, those in need, and those who carry the weight of injustice in their daily lives. All workers are our family, regardless of race, orientation, creed, or nationality. Only by standing in solidarity, this holiday season and every day, can we create a world that provides opportunity for all.
On behalf of the leadership and staff of UAW Region 8, we wish you all tidings of great joy this holiday season. May you find peace and comfort in the days ahead. Remember, every day can be like Christmas if we carry love and solidarity within our hearts throughout the year.
Season Greetings,

Director Tim Smith UAW Region 8
